lauren's life,

Loving Lately | July 13, 2015

Sorry I’ve been around not as often guys, my life has been a little insane (but I have been uploading regularly on my YouTube channels so be sure to follow me there). Tonight I wanted to drop by and share some of the things I’ve been into lately. Some are old, some are new, and some are just kind of ridiculous. Enjoy!

Young and Hungry

I’m a Netflix junkie and this show was one I definitely binge watched. I watched season one a while back but realized that season two was just put up on Netflix and lost my mind. It’s one of those super cheesy romantic comedy series but there’s just something about it that I love. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s Emily Osment, Ashley Tisdale, and Jesse McCartney all in the same show as well that tugs on my 90’s Family Channel heart strings. Also I’ve developed the biggest little girl crush on Jonathan Sadowski (seriously why have I not seen him before now?!)… Don’t judge me, just go watch it. You can check out the trailer HERE!

I’ve always been a huge animal lover so it makes me ridiculously sad that I’m stuck in a pet free building and having my dog live over four hours away from me. Clearly the answer to solving this was to buy myself a pet fish. It’s that fine line between it not really being a pet but still feeling like I have a new bff that I need to care for. So meet Fredrick, my new double tail Betta Fish. I think he’s pretty cool. Even though I get mad anxiety when I leave him at home all day when I go to work #newmomthings am I right ladies? PS getting a photo of him is impossible so I promise I’ll have a super cute one up soon.

Bikini Shopping

This blows my mind because there are very few things I hate more than having to wear a bikini but goddammit I do love shopping for them. I decided to be crazy and hit up the VS semi-annual sale a few weeks ago and picked up two new bikinis, as well as I finally revealed a ton of super on sale bikini tops I picked up from American Apparel back when they had their 90% off sale earlier in the year. Now I just need to keep hitting the gym to be confident to rock these guy by the time I hit California in October.

Nails Inc X Victoria Beckham

Posh Spice and nail polish is a combo that just can’t go wrong. I was hesitant to drop this big of a bill on a single bottle of polish but I’m a sucker for packaging and the luxe box and weighted cap made me cave. I’ll have a full review on this guy coming up later this week but spoiler alert: it lasted almost an entire week without chipping and I will 100% be purchasing the new version as well.

I’m not quite sure if it’s my attempt to be trendy or me just trying to pull of wearing pyjamas every day to work but I’ve been loving rocking men’s styles lately. Today I was super cute and comfy for work in this men’s tank in a size large as a dress with a oversized chiffon, not in this photo obviously, tied around my waist and sneakers (seriously one of my new favourite outfits). Yesterday I wore this loose button up with shiny leggings and a cropped bustier underneath for more feminine twist on men’s pieces.

Spring Staples: Nail Polish

Around this time last year I released a blog post on my top 5 nail polishes for summer, which I’m pretty sure has been my most popular post to date. I must say I was being a little premature last time around considering summer doesn’t actually begin until the end of June… So this year I decided to actually get my seasons straight and give you guys some spring polishes first (I mean I know I’m a little late sorry about that). So here you have it ladies, some of my fav springy nail polishes.

This is either the ugliest or the cutest colour ever. It’s true to the name “American Denim”, a true blue jeans blue. Also this guy is on sale at American Apparel for 50% so I mean you need it right (I can’t find it online but my store has like a bajillion so you can probs track on down in store still)?

It wouldn’t be a spring nail post without a little lavender am I right ladies? This one is pale without making my super pale sense look even more washed out and I love the Formula X formula (actually cringed while writing that I’m sorry you had to read it). Side note: Sephora describes this colour as “lavender mist” and I don’t even know what that means but it’s pretty so whateva.

I don’t even need to talk about this one. It’s salmon and adorable and Essie’s formula is on point and isn’t streaky and this colour gets me a million compliments every time I wear it to work. Van D’Go is flawless, okay bye.

This guy has all the swatches because I wanted to try and show how one layer compared to two (tops is one, bottom is two). I think it’s super cute by itself but it looks great on top of another colour as well, Van D’Go here. This may not be everyone’s cup of tea but sometime I just want to feel like a pretty princess and this does it for me. Sorry… Can’t find this one online either but it was also 50% off in store if you can track it down!

NailSwatch5.1First things first, sorry this is the messiest swatch ever but my nails were struggling. This one is probably my most worn polish from the past few months. I think white nail polish look so chic and effortless and as you can see I love American Apparel’s formula (fun fact they’re made in the same place as OPI but are $3 less expensive). I’ve heard raves about Blanc from Essie but I’m gonna stick to this bad boy for the time being.

So there you have it folks, just a little handful of both my old and some new favourites. My favourite two are T-Shirt and Van D’Go but clearly I like the rest of them enough to put them in a post so they’re all pretty fab. So if you don’t have any of these go get yourself some (or at least try to find some similar colours)!

Zero Calorie Manicure: OPI/Coca-Cola Collaboration

OPI X Coca-Cola Collaboration
OPI X Coca-Cola Collaboration

OPI is well known for coming out with collections with everyone and their mother, so it’s about time they collaborated with Coca Cola and came out with some new polishes based off of different Coke products. If you know me you’d know that I practically bleed Diet Coke so I couldn’t dare pass this opportunity up (Also had a discount on OPI polishes so I justified it).

OPI's My Signature Is DC
OPI’s My Signature Is DC

To be honest I only purchased “My Signature is “DC”” because it was the polish based off of Diet Coke but I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. It is described as a super shimmery silver, and that’s exactly what it is! This polish is a beautiful silver, almost chrome, colour with very very find silver glitter throughout it as well. I am a fan of the colour but it’s really the formulation of this polish that does it for me. In one coat it was completely opaque and wasn’t chunky or rough in any way, which I find is an issue sometimes with glittery polishes. I like this polish way more than I expected when I purchased it and will definitely be reaching for it come the holiday season.

OPI's Today I Accomplished Zero
OPI’s Today I Accomplished Zero

The other polish I purchased is “Today I Accomplished Zero”, based off of my second favourite beverage Diet Coke. This polish is described as a red glitter suspended in a black jelly base. I’m glad they called it a jelly base and not a regular polish base because it’s as sheer as sheer can be. With the first coat I was not too impressed, although there was enough red glitter for my liking the black was almost non existent. Luckily the second coat was a lot better but still nothing fantastic. My other issue with this one is the texture; after drying it was matte(ish) and chunky. Even with a top coat on it I can see feel the lumps of glitter underneath it, not cool. It is a pretty colour and I’ll probably include it in my Halloween/fall picks but if you’re debating shelling out the $10 for this one I’d say no.

If you want to take a look at the rest of the collection you can take a look here! My only other comment is how I must gush about Nail Polish Canada again, free shipping in Canada and they look less than 2 full days to ship it this time (love them!). Moral of this post, Diet Coke wins my heart… Again.

Summer Staples: Nail Polish

If you’ve been here for a while you’d know that I’m a nail polish junkie, so I thought it’s only fair that I give you guys a few suggestions for fabulous summer polishes. Whether you’re a pastel, neon, and dramatic nail polish girl I’ll try to supply you with a little bit of everything with these favourites.FlipFlopFantasySwatch

I’m going to start it off with everyone’s favourite neon, “Flip Flop Fantasy” by China Glaze. This polish is a neon coral and dries to a matte-ish finish, so a top coat is necessary for a nice finish, that is opaque in 2 coats. If you’re looking for a summer colour that’ll give you the illusion of a tan this will become your go to. (Photographed with “Teenage Dream” by OPI’s Katy Perry collection on top.

FijiSwatchIf you’re looking for something a little more subtle pink a perfect substitute is “Fiji” by Essie. I find Fiji to be the perfect pastel pink polish. I used to be a sucker for Ballet Slipper but ever since Fiji walked into my life I find it way too sheer. Opaque in 2 coats, possibly 1 if you’re risky like that, it gives you that tan look without the shock of a neon.

MintCandyAppleSwatchWhile we’re on the topic of Essie cult favourites it’s only fair that I bring up “Mint Candy Apple”. Although it is a bit more of a spring than a typical summer shade, it’s still a polish that I find myself reaching for when I don’t know what else to wear (besides Fiji, I always pick Fiji first). It’s once again an opaque pastel polish with a beautiful cream finish. I have mint greens from several different brands and I have to say this one is miles ahead of any other dupes.

NaughtyNauticalSwatchI’ve realized that not every girl is a into pretty pastels so this polish is a deeper more mermaid inspired colour, “Naughty Nautical” by Essie. Originally it was featured in a summer collection last year but to my knowledge it’s now permanent polish (but you can still find discounted last year bottles at Winners so check for it there!). This shimmery blue-green beach day out on the boat. Like all the previous Essie colours it’s fantastic quality and a perfect match for your bikini and beach tote. (The photo makes it look a lot greener than it comes off in persona which is more of a teal)

May VoxBox: imPRESS

imPress press on manicure voxbox from Influenster.
imPress press on manicure voxbox from Influenster.

It’s that time again, I was chosen to try out another VoxBox from influenster. This time I was sent two sets of imPress press on manicures. This manicure claims to be revolutionary in the world of press on nails since there’s none of that pesky nail glue needed and they claim to be more flexible than your typical nail. First off I have to say that I’m not a big fake nail girl. I have really small nail beds so generally press on nails don’t fit me properly, plus I’m a nail polish junkie so I love changing up my colour every few days. Right away I found these a little too short to cover my natural nail, which obviously wouldn’t be an issue if you were using them to lengthen your nails, but oddly enough they fit decently in the width. The issue with this is that I think people with average sized nail beds would find them too narrow.

The two boxes I received were in Hottie and Evil Queen (from what I’m assuming is a Disney villain collection from the box). Hottie is very typical fake nail pattern, which I was not into. It looks like something something a 10 year old would ask for as a pattern at the salon on their birthday, it was so tacky I put them on for photos but couldn’t stand to keep them there. Evil queen is a really pretty green/purple duochrome modeled after the Evil Queen from Snow White. I don’t mind this colour as much but I could get the same colour from “For the Twill of It” by Essie without the pain of trying to get nails to fit an stick. I’ve seen other girl’s posts from their boxes so I know there are other colours and patterns that are nicer, but those are my opinions on the ones I got in my box.

P1020128 P1020130

Now on to the application… I really appreciate that it comes with a prep pad to clean your nails before hand, and the application was simple (make sure you leave your thumbs for last though). After I got them on I was right in saying they were too short, also they were so squared off it was difficult to type and text in them. They do stay on well enough and I can see what they mean when they claim to be flexible. The only issue with having them on is that the adhesive didn’t cover the full nail so if I ran my fingers through my hair the hair would get stuck in between my nail and the fake one, not cute if you’re trying to get your ponytail on. P1020134

Then there’s removal… First off, I did take these off as soon as I had taken the photos so it’s possible that I didn’t have a great experience because I hadn’t worn them for the full week. I applied nail polish remover on the edges then kind of pried them off (the plastic nail itself almost melted at this point). I’ve read some places that these left people’s nails in perfect condition and came off flawlessly, which I disagree with. I’m not sure how well you can see but in the after photos it is visible that they ripped off the top layer of the nail and when I applied regular polish afterwards it didn’t go on smooth (even with a base and top coat).

Overall if you’re looking for a typical press on nail that isn’t too long, is easy to apply, and wears for a long time this may be the right fit. But if you like more of a round or oval nail and like them long this wouldn’t be my first choice. They’re simple and fast but I’d rather just paint my own. Sorry!

Sally Hansen VoxBox

If you’ve looked through my blog before you would know that I’m an avid nail polish junkie. Last week my roommate looked utterly appalled when he exclaimed that it was the first day he had seen me with naked nails since he’s known me (approximately a year and a half). So needless to say I was very excited when I was told I would be receiving the January VoxBox from Influenster. This month was a Sally Hansen VoxBox and I received 3 of the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure polishes. These polishes claim to gave 7 benefits in come bottle and also claim to make your life easier by acting as both a bottom and top coat as well as supplying opaque colour. If you’d like to see my full review on them I made a video in which I will link here (also photos are to come here when rush is over an I can have my nails a colour other than pink). Overall I really did enjoy the polishes. The lighter colour left a little bit to be desired, I applied 3 coats and could still see my nail through it, but the darker ones are gorgeous and definitely supplied that gel finish I was looking for. Once again, for a full review and look at the polishes be sure to go watch my video on them, but I hope this little write up supplies some insight on there loves polishes!

Perfect Pinks!

I’ve been seeing a lot around lately so I thought I would join the trend a make a most on some of my favourite pink products since it’s October (aka breast cancer awareness month). You’ll see that obviously there will be more of some types of products than others since not a lot of pink shadows and whatnot exist but here are a list of my favourite pink products!

1. I Am Strong- Essie

This is one of the polishes that came out with the breast cancer awareness line that Essie did so it would be silly not to include it. It also just happens to be the perfect Barbie pink. I happily wore this on my nails for a few weeks now.

2. Pink Mosaic Blush-Marcelle

Unfortunately I do not know that name of this blush since I received it at blog van city instead of picking it up from the store like normal people. I just love the mix of the shades here, they supply the perfect flush without any glitter or too much colour.

3. Speak Louder-MAC

I will forever rave about this. I picked it up on a whim as a back to MAC and it wasn’t until having it for 6 months did I fall deeply in love with it. Now it’s become my go to pink lipstick. You need it in your life.

4. Clarisonic Mia 2

This is my newest baby, and the packaging is pink so I can include it in here right? My Mia is one of those things that I wasn’t aware that I needed in my life until I had it, now I cannot imagine cleaning my face any other way.

5. Teenage Dream-OPI

We started off with a nail polish so why not end with one. This is one of those products that no matter what the base colour is I get an uncontrollable urge to throw this glitter on top of it. Because nothing is better than a pink and silver glitter, right?

Happy Halloween! (NailPolishCanada Review)

P1020068Earlier this week I thought I would treat myself and finally buy some polishes from Nail Polish Canada since all of the lovely Halloween collections have come out. I was going to buy an orange and black splatter from work but when I saw what looked closer to a Halloween glitter I had to jump on it, and who can say no to glow in the dark polish right? So then I ended up with these babies.

First I’ll talk a little bit about my experience with the company. I set up my account and placed my order on Thursday, then received my conformation email on Friday saying that I should expect my polishes in 1-5 business days. Usually I’m prepared for up to two weeks for shipping so seeing this alone excited me. I was even more ecstatic when I got the notification Monday morning saying that they had already arrived. When I picked it up it was in a nice little box that was filled with foam peanuts and my receipt. The polishes themselves were wrapped together in bubble wrap (if it wasn’t such a fast/short shipping process this would worry me since there’s a possibility the bottles to bang against each other). Overall I’m really pleased with the service. Products I love, collections I can’t find in store, and free and fast shipping. I’m pleased, massive thumbs up for NailPolishCanada.

Now onto the polishes themselves…

P1020065The first one that caught my attention was “Ghoulish Glow” by China Glaze. Most glow in the dark polishes aren’t actually to great when it comes to glowing but this one surprised me. The bottle defiantly glows and with 2-4 coats it will glow on your nails as well. A few of the reviews did complain about how it’s not exactly a top coat and is more of a yellow polish in itself, but for the most part I disagree. I could see how over a darker base colour it would show but I used it on top of “Ballet Slippers” by Essie and barely noticed a change in colour. The only other thing I noticed about it is that it left a strange texture on my nails, also the feeling you get with a matte top coat but without the matte look. This is annoying if left but if you apply a top coat it’s perfectly fine. If you’re looking for a good glow polish this one is definitely worth it for the $6.75 it was online, if it weren’t for the strange texture it would be a perfect.

P1020063The other polish I order is “Boo-gie Down” from China Glaze. It’s a strange mix of difference sized hexagonal orange, black, and white glitter in a clear base. I originally wanted to put this over an orange polish but didn’t have that available so I decided to just layer it instead. The glitter is definitely sparse in this, there’s about 5-6 coats on in the photo, and it doesn’t disperse evenly by any means. To create this I did 2 basic semi-even coats then placed any extra glitter in places that the original coats had missed. It did also leave my nails with a lot of texture but 2 coats of the Formula X top coat from Sephora and it was completely evened out. My final verdict is that if you have the time and patience this special effects coat does look really cool on it’s own, and I also think it would look awesome over another Halloween coloured polish. I would get more use out of it and it would save a lot of time if the glitter was in a black polish instead of a clear one, or even it if was thicker go the glitter went on more intensely. So if you want a fun, festive glitter this is worth the $6.75 I paid for it, but at the same time I probably won’t use it any other time of the year and it isn’t exactly the easiest product I’ve ever worked with so keep that in mind.

So there are some of my thoughts on my experience with NailPolish Canada as well as a min review on these China Glaze Halloween themed polishes from their Monster Ball collection. If you like these polish reviews let me know and I’ll be sure to do more, and if you’re a fellow Canadian be sure to check out them out for some awesome deals and fast shipping on polishes.
