lauren's life,

Vancouver Visits | Menchie’s West Broadway

I was absolutely beaming when I was given the opportunity to check out the Kits location of Menchie’s and create my summer dream froyo mix. Maybe it’s the white girl in me but I absolutely love frozen yogurt. I’ve always been an ice cream fiend so the fact that this offers a slightly healthier option wins me over. I’m also still one of those big kids who mixes everything together when they get a slurpee so self-serve frozen yogurt bars where I get to throw everything together is a dream come true for me.

I have to say that I absolutely love anything over the bridge. It’s one of the areas of the Lower Mainland that I haven’t ventured to much but the time I spend at Kits last summer made my love it. I’m also trying to use my Tuesday break in between classes in venture out that way a little more so hopefully I’ll know my way around soon enough. This location is on West Broadway just off of Trafalgar, in the middle of everything (also shoutout to Pure Nail Bar which is beside them because that’s where I almost always go to get my toes done). It has plenty of seating inside as well as an adorable little patio outside if you want to enjoy the sunshine. They change them up but offer a variety of sorbets and frozen yogurts (I believe either 10 or 12 options daily) which range from sweet treats like Oreo, cake batter, and peanut butter to something more tangy with plain tart yogurt, raspberry, and other fruity sorbets. They also order a ton of toppings. Seriously… Look at all of them. I feel like this is more toppings than I’ve seen at any other self-serve yogurt bar and I appreciate all the little ones like walnuts, graham crumbs, and roasted almonds. Also I appreciate all the candy which I will definitely be hitting up next time I go in. Then obviously there’s fruit and sauces as well but I need to be in a very specific mood for that so I stuck to the plain toppings today. Now onto my yogurt creation!

I usually go for fruity flavours but I couldn’t pass up trying their newest flavour Oreo so I want for a classic summer staple instead and recreated the classic s’more in froyo. For my base yogurt I used cake batter and Oreo (seriously guys Oreo is so good) and I topped it off with graham cracker crumbs, white mini chocolate chips, loooooots of sprinkles, and a little baby waffle cone for some crunch. I must say it was absolutely delicious and I’m very excited to be hitting Menchie’s up now only in Vancouver but also in the Okanagan when I go home.

Finally I wanted to show off what I wore because this is one of my favourite go to outfits for the summer. I mentioned in my last post that I love menswear and this combo is so comfy and so cute I can’t handle it. This is just a large men’s muscle tank from American Apparel (where else am I right?) and a discontinued oversized black chiffon from AA tied around my waist. I also used this monochromatic outfit as an excuse to rock my neon coral Rebecca Minkoff crossbody and threw on some super old Steve Madden strappy sandals and a chunk gold chain necklace (which you totes can’t see in this photo but I promised it looked great okay).

So there you have it kids, be prepared to see some posts throughout the summer of my Menchie’s adventures because you best believe I’ll have the strongest froyo game around. Also a huge thank you to Menchie’s Canada for hooking us bloggers up for the summer! If you hit up a Menchie’s this summer make sure to #MenchiesMyWay showing off your creation and to tag them on Instagram!

Holiday Gift Guide: The Boy

It hit me hard when I went to pick up new lip balm today and there was a huge sign in front of Superstore that declared that there was only 34 shopping days left until Christmas. So I thought before the whole Black Friday craziness goes down I would start these posts on some ideas for different people in your lives. Obviously this will change compared on the specific person’s style and what they already have but I’m going to give some general ideas.

I thought it was safest to start with men because I constantly hear that they are the hardest to stop for (which I must say it completely untrue for me). I’ve seen a lot of ‘preppy’ blogs do these posts on what to buy your boyfriend and I laugh so hard diet coke spits out my nose at some of the suggestions. He probably doesn’t want nor need an embroidered belt, quilted picture frame, or any sort of keychain (#sorrynotsorry). I was aiming to find gifts that at least 80% of guy will get some use out of, even if it isn’t something extravagant. I also didn’t want to just keep this to boyfriends alone, us single girls still have brothers and bffs to buy for so don’t expect a cutesy couples gift on this list. Okay? Let’s go!

The Sporty Guy

This one is actually the easiest since there’s a million things to get. If you hit sales you can manage to get an Under Armour or Nike compression/workout shirts for pretty cheap, I picked up one from the outlet for $20 but they’re on the website for $35 regularly which isn’t too bad.  Another great clothing option is shorts! My brother wears his to the gym every day and never thinks about guying a new pair (seriously everyone always remembers shirts and forgets these guys). This pair is only $35 as well and are almost identical to the ones he has and loves. Another option is the food option, I’m not an expert by any means in this department but if you drop into any GNC or health store you’ll be sure to get the low down on exactly what you need. This gift is perfect because it’s something you’ll know be uses and would buy for himself. Finally I bring you the most boring gift ever, headphones. Every gym goer needs these, so why not give them a high quality pair they’ll be sure to get some use out of.

The Nerd

If you have one of these guys in your life then you’re lucky and embrace it. The best thing about this is even though you think you need to get super high tech gifts you totally don’t, because they’ve already got that for themselves. My first (and favourite) option is a super cool old school watch, if you want to go all out get a calculator watch, but if they’re a little more subtle these Casio 90’s remakes are pretty sweet too. More on the tech related side another super practical gift is portable chargers, there’s a ton of cute pink ones floating around for girls but you can find some super cheap/plain ones all over the place for your favourite dude too.

The Bro

This one is also easy, because he’ll probably like anything you give him and never shops for himself. These gifts can apply to just about any guy in your life so they’re good fall back. Once again, clothing. Guys don’t buy themselves clothing very often so this is a good go to gift. Don’t go too flashy or try too hard to be trendy, the point is you want them to get use out of it. I like to stick to basics; hoodies, and t-shirts (tri-blends and power washed tees I find are best for guy since neither shrink so even the laziest can wash them without fail) which are handy because almost all types are available online in 3-packs to save some cash. Another easy option is a phone case, and I don’t mean some frilly case which a photo of a kitten printed on it. Most models of phones offer LifeProof cases which can withstand almost anything and have a warranty on them. Obviously I have to include food too, literally any gift card for food is a fantastic gift. I know people say gift cards are “impersonal” (which I think is bullshit) but you always get your best girlfriend a Starbucks gift card, why not throw in a Subway or Chipotle one for your man?

Finally I shall present you with the ultimate gift for pretty much any guy out there (who’s legal in your country of course) and that’s…. ALCOHOL! If he’s a super class fellow you can go with a bottle of whiskey and if he’s more realized (or you don’t want to spend the money) it’s easy to go with a 6-pack of beer and pull it off as a gag gift. There’s also great places all over that offer single oversized bottles of craft beer which make a fantastic gift since you know he’ll never shell out the money to buy it for yourself.

So there you have it my friends, my mini gift guide for all the men in your lives. Hopefully this gives you some ideas on what ti get your man that he’ll actually get some use out of.

Back to School Basics: Fashion

Whether you’re going into your freshman year of high school or senior year of college I think there are a few pieces every girl needs to have in her fall wardrobe. So I’ll cut right to the chase and present you with my back to school fashion must haves.

Comfortable Jeans

This is an obvious #1 wardrobe staple. I’m personally more into black jeans since they go with everything and after going high wasited I’ll never go back. My favourite pair is the American Apparel Easy Jeans, they come in a million colours (loving them in burgandy for fall) and are super super stretchy without the cheap no pocket/no zipper look of jeggings. If you aren’t into high waisted jeans I also recommend American Eagle’s Skinny Jeans, before AA came into my life I lived in these.

‘Goes With Everything’ Cardigan

I didn’t realize I needed this item so badly until I bought it, now I’m kinda ashamed to say I’ve already planned buying the other 2 colours for my next pay cheque. It is a big pricey but the American Apparel Shawl Cardigan goes with literally everything and looks effortlessly chic. Not only is it super cute but also surprisingly warm. A more affordable option is this knit cardigan from Garage, the American Eagle open knit cardigan, and this one from Forever 21 looks almost identical to the $90 AA one (maybe a tad bit thinner).

The Perfect Planner

In my freshman advice post I mentioned how planning and writing down dates will save you so much stress. I personally use a Large Lilly Pulitzer Agenda (mine is in trippin and sippin) but there are some cute ones the same size from Kate Spade as well as some more affordable ones from Victoria Secret Pink. Also is you’re too classy for bright colours and patterns a basic leather planner always works too.

Cute Booties

And I ain’t talking about what you’ve been working towards with those squats. There’s nothing that pulls an outfit together and makes you look like you tried harder than some heeled booties (flat ones obviously for younger girls). You can go all out and get some real leather ones like the Joplyn Booties from Steve Madden or a far less exensive but fantastic quality option is any of the booties from Old Navy (I’ve had a pair for a year I wear like crazy that show almost no wear). Aldo also makes a ton of real leather ankle boots including these adorable oxford inspired ones.

Functional Bag

Last but not least is a wearable everyday bag to carry all that school junk around. My go to bag is the Sophie Tote from Kate Spade (it’s no longer carried but this one is the closest I can find currently from Kate Spade), H&M also carries an almost identical version of the Sophie tote though. I also picked up last season’s version of this structured bag for $30 at an Aldo outlet. Finally I thought I’d leave you with a backpack. I’m not one for them but I think they’re appropriate for high school. I know I’m basic but I’m a fan of the original Herschel  backpack in black as well as this adorable pink one.

Have fun back to school shopping!

Christmas in August?

DaysUntilChristmasI mentioned in my “What’s in my carry on?” post about a month ago that if there’s something you should know about me it’s that I love travelling. I have another one to add to the list of things that are essential to lauren’s life, and that is Christmas. I freaking love Christmas. I know you’re thinking, doesn’t everyone love Christmas? I mean it is the most wonderful time of the year. To which I say yes, but I really love Christmas. To the point where I watch Christmas movies year round and never get sick of Christmas music (which is shocking considering I work in retail). I’m also a gift giver, so I thought I would take this time to supply you with some lovely links for all those summer time Christmas lovers out there like me. And to everyone else who thinks I’m crazy, #sorrynotsorry.

All the winter styles; like this velvet dress I bought today, this velvet tee I’m planning on picking up in navy and possibly red closer to the holidays, this velvet skater dress I’m looking into in wine or navy, these cropped long sleeves I’m going to pick up in every colour once my location gets them, all these in navy (I already have the navy chiffon tank since it’s on sale at some stores!), and finally this skirt in crème to match all the navy tops I’m going to pick up. Sorry this is probably overwhelming but I’ve been uploading all the stock the past few days and I’m dyyyyyyiiiiiing over all the velvet. It’s too good. Also I will still be doing a fall/winter fashion must haves to make sure to watch out for that come October.

Happy Super Early Holidays!

Happy (Belated) Canada Day!

I know I’m a little late but lately my life has been a bit nuts, think school + work + having my best friend in down, but I wanted to showcase my Canadian pride and show off a bit of my night. I didn’t do anything too exciting to be honest. I worked for 7 hours then headed down to Canada place to watch the fire works. Unfortunately we had the worst spot ever and ended up being stuck behind tree and not seeing much (saaaaad). Long story short I took a very very long train ride home and was up by 8 the next day to put in another full work day.

As ashamed as I am to admit it I wasn’t even super festive when it comes to Canadian apparel. But either way I thought I would share my outfit/very last minutes nails with you guys because better late than never right? I know the quality isn’t fantastic but I’ll link the pieces down below so you can see a better look at the pieces I have on!

blog vancity

P1010926Last weekend I had the joy of attending an event at Metropolis at Metrotown hosted by Sheila, Jordana, and Angela called blogvancity. It was an opportunity for Vancouver based bloggers and vloggers to meet each other, try out new products, as well as meet several different industry professionals. I went with my friend Ania I knew from YouTube before hand and it was amazing to meet some other girls in the city who also worked with YouTube. We also got the chance to met so many bloggers, aka I now have about 40 more blogs I get to add to my reading list (yay!). And then obviously there was the goodie bag which we were all excited about. We were given a few products for everyone as well as a few that we got the choice of different colours/skin types. The products were Revlon, Marcelle, Annabelle, Almay, and some China Glaze polishes provided by NailPolishCanada. Needless to say, most of these products were flawless and I’m so blessed that I got the chance to try them all out. If you want a review on any of the products seen above then I’ll be very happy to do that. Once again a massive thank you to the ladies that set this up for us and I’m really looking forward to future events.

Here’s a list of the ladies involved/links to their blogs:
